International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia and Transphobia

Sunday 17 May marks the day in 1990 when the World Health Organization officially declassified homosexuality as a mental health disorder. Only 36 years ago. Today, the day continues to be a necessary moment in raising awareness and a critical call for humanity.

This year’s theme is ‘at the heart of democracy’. It calls us to remember that a society is only as healthy as its ability to protect everyone.

To build equity and justice into the heart – the foundation, the soil – of our society and decision-making is to build a future where days like this can centre more on celebration of identity, rather than a necessary and ongoing call for safety.

Our picks this month explore resources for yourself, your classrooms, and for sharing in your wider communities, to help build a world where every identity is a celebrated part of a just and sustainable democracy.
