Our Picks – July 2023

  • On 2 August, join Poet in the City for Run the Night: Experiments in Sound. An experimental night with Woolwich-raised poet and sound artist MA.MOYO (AKA Belinda Zhawi) that fuses archival audio of Black radicals with original poetry, city versus nature soundscapes, and sampled music.
  • Apply to join the afikra Global Youth Academy designed for high school students with a deep interest in the Arab world. Learn about our past and present, and help shape this region’s future. Through their virtual study abroad model, the students will form life-long connections with other students from around the world and make new intellectual connections about the Arab world’s music, visual arts, architecture, literature, history, and other aspects of our cultures.
  • The Museum of London has a host of free resources to explore Windrush. Listen to Shango tell his personal migration story as he left Trinidad in 1961 for Britain. Find out about his hopes and ambitions and the realities of life in London during the 1960s as a Black person.
