The Broken Pieces
Kintsugi is the ancient Japanese art of repairing broken pottery with gilding. The broken parts are put back together with gold – out of the process of reparation a beautiful new piece is born. The cracks are therefore celebrated as part of the history of the object rather than something to be discarded, forgotten or left behind.
As we brace ourselves for the new challenges this year brings, we are embracing the fissures and the cracks. We are picking up the broken pieces and intentionally binding them back together with hope, light, allyship and conviviality. This year we are reaching out to connect and to seal our struggles with those of others. More than ever, we are paying attention to the scarification not as something to hide, but as the means to create and make meaning. The obstacle thus becomes the way.
