Wild Wild Things at Rich Mix

Over the past six weeks, Year 9 students from Oaklands School in Bethnal Green have been working with theatre-makers to capture stories from their local communities, asking: what is it, to be thirteen?

From over 20 recorded interviews, a performance has been created to platform these often unheard tales of the teenage experience. On the 25th July, the students will perform this touching piece, sharing the personal and compelling voices that they’ve collected, using the technique of Headphone Verbatim. Wild, Wild Things asks “what needs to change, and how?”.

Headphone Verbatim theatre is an intimate storytelling method, allowing the audience to enter into other people’s worlds. The technique allows every breath, every utterance, every idiosyncratic detail of the speaker to be brought into the room by the performer. So sit back and listen as these captivating interviews are performed – by actors – as they listen simultaneously to the original recordings through headphones.

This is part of Global Learning London’s Erasmus-funded STORYsilience project that brings together young people from Slovenia, Turkey and the UK to share stories of community, everyday life and resilience in the wake of COVID-19.
